Itty Bitty Print

What IS it with the itty bitty print in a lot of websites and blogs? One example would be
http://www.petergabriel.com/
Not everyone has excellent eyesight--especially after trying to read these sites (I'm a big PG fan, so I'm kinda stuck). My eyesight is poor and I try to enlarge the font with the Zoom feature on Windows, but why did this catch on in the first place? Are most people's eyesight THAT much better than mine?
Sort of a pet peeve of mine...

you are right rraven, I don't know how people preview their site sometimes... small prints, excessive background image or pattern making the text un readable, or worse blue text one red background  .
