Areas over boney places or spots where the tendons are very close to the surface of the skin can be painful---ankles, for example, or a shoulder blade if you're really thin.
also, spots of your body where there are bundles of nerves like around the kidneys towards your sides. Be really careful you don't jump on reflex. You might end up with a dragon with an extra-long wing tip.
"Fatty" places hurt the least, like on the belly.
The pain level depends completely on you. It's not a matter of tolerance; it's just that some people don't feel pain as easily so it doesn't hurt them much.
I carried on for most of mine , except for the ones on the inside of my forearms and around my belly button. Those were easy.

Re: painfull?
i have decided i am going to have one done, im going to get one that means something to me and my daughter on my shoulder or lower back, im only 16 so im going to w8 untill nxt year, my daughter will be 3 so maybe she could help me choose a design thanks for your comments everyone
I have four: one on each shoulder, one on my inner elbow, and a large one on my lower back. The ones on my arms and shoulders didn't hurt very much at all, but the one on my lower back hurt like a bastard - and it took seven hours to finish it.
I imagine the most painful places to get a tat would be feet/ankles, and neck. Yeow!
Does anyone know how painful a tat on the inner side of the hipbone would be? I really want one & have a month or so to think about it so yeah. It's going to be really small and stuff.....
